It’s an unspoken rule that the music industry is a makeshift kind of heaven. It’s a place where cares are forgotten and masks are shed. For a few hours and a couple albums worth of songs, you can be whomever you want to be. Unfortunately, the ills of our society at large are creeping into our musical safe spaces. Rape culture, kidnappings, violence, shootings, and general terror appear to be at an all time high. Recently, we’ve stood in fear, watching as hatred and intolerance have seeped into the few places we feel safe.
If the world is going to hell, then there’s only one thing we can do about it—give it a helping hand back up. One band that's caught on to this idea is Modern Baseball. They have taken many steps to make sure all of their fans feel welcome at their shows, from unveiling a phone line for fans who feel unsafe to making gender neutral bathrooms accessible.
As for the emergency line, it’s simple. When someone’s making an unwanted advance, when someone's fallen in the pit, when you're feeling harassed, or when something is generally making you feel unsafe while you're trying to get your groove on to Modern Baseball show, sending a text to (201)731-6626 instantly connects you to the band's tour manager, who then gets security to handle the matter.
In addition to helping fans out with a quick way to signal the Bat MoBo Call (Can that be a thing?), incorporating gender neutral bathrooms into their shows is an effort that’s made the whole shindig an ultimately accepting environment. Our own Ashley Abdenour learned this during our recent snack drive with the band in Detroit. She says the entire event was incredible for the way inclusion was approached, and the band really helped the cause by bringing in people through social media and donation of merchandise. They just can't stop helping, even if they wanted to - which is why they're pitching in with yet another Punk Out Snack Drive in Philadelphia this Saturday. Check out the details for that here, and make sure you come rock out while doing your part.
Modern Baseball isn’t known for going easy on their lyrics, or for putting on a light-hearted show. More than anything, the band is doing what they can to bring you what you deserve as a concert goer. The world is a scary place. By giving anyone, regardless of what they identify as, a safe place to be, Modern Baseball is giving fans the freedom to exist and the courage to be who they are, and that is a beautiful thing. If more bands step up to the plate and follow Modern Baseball's lead, the scene wouldn’t only be safer, but also stronger. Confidence and happiness leads to better people, and a better world. We can only get there by lending a hand up. Let’s all take a minute to thank Modern Baseball for extending theirs.
