As a queer artist who also identifies as a cisgender woman, I am always searching for artists like me. In a way, we all gravitate towards certain musicians or icons because they feel personal. You want to hear someone tell your story. The LGBTQ community, especially, is starved for female voices.
But what about the girls making waves right now? The up and comers who are rebranding what queer music looks and sounds like?
Here is a list of ten queer musicians that rock my socks:
The New Icons
Beth Ditto of The Gossip
I saw this woman put glitter in her mouth and kiss an audience member in the front row. The Gossip has been around for a while, but like all great bands, they reinvent themselves. Beth Ditto has been on the cover of Bust Magazine, posed nude on the cover of Britain’s Love magazine, and in addition to her queer activism, has been a voice for body positivity. She even designed her own line of plus-sized clothes.
All of the members of Sleater-Kinney
Sleater-Kinney has a gigantic lesbian following but the buzz has been pretty contained when it comes to the rest of the world. After a six-year hiatus, they have dropped a new record, No Cities to Love, and are selling out almost every date on their upcoming tour. You may recognize founding member, Carrie Brownstein from the TV show Portlandia.
Laura Jane Grace of Against Me!
Laura Jane Grace is one of the nicest people I have ever met. She is an incredible role model and with the release of Against Me!’s album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues, and her coming-out as transgender has inspired a wave of trans-positivity - a community that has been underrepresented in popular music.
The Up and Comers
Alexa San Roman of Love, Robot
Listen to Magic Mouth if you want a mix of dance, punk, and R&B, and if you like awesome queer lady drummers. The entire band is queer-friendly and their songs are incredibly catchy.
Freya Wilcox is a good friend of mine, and I tell her how obsessed I am with her music every time I see her. She has a strong and commanding stage presence, and her songs remind me of a young Joan Jett.
Mare Lemongelli of Cheerbleeders
